The concept of search engine optimization (SEO) has gained a lot of importance today due to the success and profitability it brings along with it. To become an SEO professional does not require you to master programming or have an indepth understanding of search engine algorithms. All it requires is an understanding of a few basic things to ensure you have a search engine friendly website.

You may also be having the best products and services to offer, best performance certifications, and an amazing team of professionals working for you and so on that add more value to your business; however, you need to understand few basics on making a great site that search engines can track easily.

Below are some fundamentals that will not only help you in creating the most search engine friendly website but also in keeping an easy track of it.

How Do Spiders Work?

One of the facts about search engines is that they utilize software programs known as bots or spiders that crawl the web and build their database. These spiders are sent to view and index pages which are later processed and retrieved from the database. A search engine spider is designed in such a way that it reads any document from top left corner to the bottom right corner as humans do.

Placing Text Links

You can also use these bots to your benefit by allowing them to spider your site completely. You can place text links that direct to some of your main pages on the website at the bottom of your page so that spiders can easily crawl through your site. It is also recommended to have a text link that directs to your site map.

Site Title

The title of your site is very important as it not only serves as a reference for the Internet users who type in the keyword but also it is one of the first things that is viewed by the search engines. You must select the best keywords and place in your title and also make sure that these keywords are relevant to the content on your webpage.

Meta Tag Description

A meta tag description contains a brief description of the webpage content. It is usually placed after the Title tag and before the Keywords Meta tag. Search engines usually use this as a source of information to know the theme of the site and to aid them in listing and ranking the website. Your meta description may contain two to three sentences with the main keyword placed in the beginning of every sentence. This description appears fully or partially along with your reference link when users search.

Keyword Usage

Choosing the right keywords to optimize your site is very important. The content on your webpages should contain the keywords that you are optimizing so that the search engine can easily track your website when a user enters a search query containing your keyword. Using your keywords correctly can help identify your site related to that particular keyword from all other sites on the Internet.

Keyword Rich Content

This is a crucial part of the SEO process as it involves creating compelling text that would make readers remember by linking back to it. Your webpage content should be written in such a way that it contains targeted keywords with an ideal keyword density. The content you write must make sense and should be relevant to the person visiting the site. You should also avoid mixing too many themes on a single page. It is also good to know that search engines are mainly text driven and are oblivious to images, sounds, flash movies, javascript, frames, directories, and similar stuff. Therefore having lots of these on your website may not be very helpful from the SEO point of view.

Anchor Text

Anchor text is hyperlinked text that you can click on. This is used in the content as an internal link that directs visitors to different topics contained in different pages in the website. Keywords that are most relevant and that relate to the overall content of your site should be used in the anchor text as search engines use this to relate your webpage content to the user query.

There are several common mistakes that people tend to make frequently with regard to search engine optimization. Below is a list of the most common ones, which if avoided, can help you gain better results and profitability in the long run.

1) Optimizing the wrong keywords

The basic step for initiating SEO is choosing the keywords that are relevant to your site and optimizing them. However, if you end up selecting the wrong keywords, all the time and effort dedicated in achieving a top ranking will be wasted. While choosing keywords, there are two types of common mistakes that are made:

a) Selecting keywords that bring untargeted traffic

One of the biggest mistakes that people often make is concentrating their efforts on driving more traffic to their sites with little regard to the quality of traffic. By this we mean optimizing a website for keywords which have absolutely no relevance to the site. For example, since the keyword “cameras” is quite popular, several people may try to optimize their website for this particular keyword with the thought that if they can attain a good ranking “cameras,” their site will get huge amount of traffic. However, if your site does not deal with cameras but attracts people to your site due to the keyword popularity, it will only create a bad user experience. This is because users will return back when they notice that the site has no relevance to what they are looking for.

b) Choosing highly competitive keywords

This is another common mistake which many people make. While building a keyword list, you may want to use the most popular keywords that are searched by users. For instance, if your website promotes mortgages and loans, you may want to use the keyword “finance” as it is extremely popular. However, you may fail to realize that such keywords are highly competitive with several other advertisers competing for it and it will be very difficult to beat those sites and get the top ranking in the search results. A better option would be to choose less competitive keywords even though they may not be as popular as the competitive keywords.

2) Overstuffing meta keywords tag

It is often seen that people stuff too may keywords in the meta keywords tag in the expectation of achieving a high ranking. However, as far as search engine ranking is concerned, meta keywords tag does not hold the same value like before. By putting hundreds of keywords in it, it is not going to help you achieve a top ranking. To attain a high ranking it is important that you place your keywords in the content of your webpages.

3) Keyword repetition

Yet another common mistake people often make is continuously repeating their keywords in the content of their webpage. It is true that you may have to repeat your keywords in your text a number of times to achieve the best keyword density, however, it does not mean overloading your page with keywords placed endlessly everywhere without making any grammatical sense. Additionally, those practicing this technique stand to lose out in the long run because search engines may penalize their site for employing such practices which are considered unethical.

4) Creating multiple similar doorway pages

Another belief that people hold to be true is that different pages should be created for different search engines since each search engine has its own algorithm. This concept is good as far as theory goes, however, it is not helpful and considered unethical. Firstly, it would take up all your time and efforts to not only create several pages which would become difficult to manage but also to update them according to the changes in the search engine algorithms. Secondly, though you may create these pages for different search engines, they may end up being quite similar to each other. Also, since doorway pages are considered as a Black Hat SEO technique which is unethical, it can also lead to your site getting banned. The best idea would be to create a single page and optimize it for one keyword for all search engines.

5) Use of hidden text

This involves inserting text that is mostly repetitive use of keywords usually placed at the bottom of the page. This hidden text is text colored to blend with the background of the page and is invisible to the user visiting the page. In order to achieve a top search engine ranking, webmasters seek to create keyword rich webpages. However, you cannot repeat keywords in a webpage endlessly as it would appear very weird to the visitor. So to make sure that the page content does not come across as strange to the visitor, but at the same time the page is keyword rich, webmasters place keywords having the same color as the background color of the webpage. The concept behind this is that the search engine spiders can detect the hidden text even if people cannot see it, as these spiders read the page’s content through the HTML code. However, it would be in your best interest to avoid using this technique as it is considered unethical and can lead to your site getting penalized.

6) Creating graphical webpages

Search engines are mainly text driven and are oblivious to images, sounds, flash movies, javascript, frames, directories, and similar stuff. Having lots graphics on your website may not be very helpful from the SEO point of view as these will not aid in achieving a high ranking. What you need to have on your site is a good amount of keyword rich content that can be crawled and indexed by search engine spiders.

7) Page Cloaking

Page Cloaking means using one webpage for the search engine that crawls the site and then altering the webpage to show another page to users. This alteration of web pages is used as a practice to trick the search engines and will deceive users about the content they will see when clicking on the search results. This technique is generally used either to prevent the competitors from viewing the source code of the optimized pages or to prevent users from seeing pages that are meant to be crawled and indexed by the search engines solely. This tactic makes it possible to prevent the search engines from spidering pages that users will see. It is recommended that you refrain from using this technique to prevent your site getting penalized or banned.

8) Too many page submissions per day

Another mistake most commonly made by people is making too many page submissions in a single day to the search engines. This can lead to overlooking of many pages from the site by the search engines. Preferably you should try submitting one page per day to search engines even though there are some search engines which accept more than one page submission from a specific domain. This will help you remain within the submission limits of all search engines, especially those which only accept one page in a day.

9) Using submission tools that are automated

It is a fact that manual submissions of sites to search engines require a lot of time and effort. Most often to save time, a lot of people use automated submission software or tools that can quickly submit sites to the search engines. However, it is important to understand that using such tools are not in the best interest of search engines and can lead to your webpages being penalized. Thus, it is better to either hire professionals who can do this for you and if budget is a constraint you can do it yourself as it would be worth your time and effort.

10) Dedicating too much time for search engine ranking

Another common mistake that people usually make is getting over obsessed to achieve high rankings to such an extent that they overlook the other important factors like their website quality, products and service quality, and so on that are equally important. No doubt search engine optimization is the best way to drive real time traffic to your site and requires you to devote a lot of time and effort to implement it but it may not be of much help to you if you lack in your product or service quality, customer satisfaction, etc. You may enjoy top rankings in the search engines but it is also crucial to devote considerable amount of time and efforts to your website as well because the ultimate goal of any business is conversions.

Today there are several SEO techniques that help you to optimize your site, but one trick whose importance is undervalued at times is a Sitemap. A Sitemap is a page on your website that indicates the entire structure of your site including different sections, links between them, and so on. In short it gives a detailed listing of your website layout. Sitemaps are very helpful as they make site navigation easy for the visitors and also help search engines index the site.

Sitemaps generally fall into two categories. One is a HTML version which is for human visitors and helps them navigate through the entire site and find the information they are looking for. The other Sitemap is an XML version which is meant for the search engine to know about all the pages on the website including all the URLs that may go unnoticed by the search engine spidering the site.

Sitemap Benefits

There are many advantages of using sitemaps which are listed below:

Easy Navigation
A sitemap helps a visitor know where to find particular information he is looking for on the site. It acts as a guide to enable easy navigation through the site without wasting time to find information.

Search Engine Indexing

Sitemaps help search engines know about any updates that you make on your site. It is not guaranteed that the search engine bot will immediately index the updated pages, but, the changes will surely be indexed much faster compared to when there isn’t any sitemap.

New Site
If you have a new site with very few links in it, sitemaps can be very helpful. This is because the search engine spider crawls through documents by following links from one page to another and if your site does not contain proper links, it would be difficult for the bots to index them.

Broken Links
If you have a site that contains a lot of content pages which are not properly linked to each other or have broken links then using sitemaps will help search engine bots to index your pages better.

Dynamic Content on Site
Sitemaps are also very helpful if you have a site where your content is updated or changed frequently. The search engines can be immediately informed of this change through your sitemap. However, this will not assure you that your changed pages will be indexed right away.

Sitemap Process
To create a Sitemap for your website there are a few simple steps that you need to follow. First, a Sitemap has to be generated after which it needs to be uploaded to the site and then finally Google needs to be notified about it.

Sitemap Generation
A sitemap can be generated in two ways. One is by using an online tool that can help you generate the sitemap and the other is by downloading and installing a sitemap generator.

The first option is much easier compared to the second one as there are several online sitemap generation tools available free of cost that make your work simpler. The second option of downloading and installing a sitemap generator is a little difficult but enables you to gain a better control of the output.

Uploading and Submitting Your Sitemap
Once your sitemap is created, it has to be uploaded to your website and Google needs to be notified about it. In order to notify Google you have to add your site to your Google Sitemap account. However, if you don’t already have a Google Sitemap account, this is the time for you to create one. Also, it is important to know that adding a sitemap to your account requires a verification indicating you are the legal owner of the website.

It is also important to know that Google does not guarantee that all the URLs in your sitemap will be spidered and indexed. For instance, if there are any image URLs in your sitemap, these will not be crawled and indexed. However, your sitemap can help the search engine to know more about your site layout which will help it to crawl your site better and faster when compared to not having a sitemap. Webmasters usually benefit from submitting sitemaps and will not be penalized for it.

One of the facts about search engines is that they utilize software programs known as bots or spiders that crawl the web and build their database. These spiders are sent to view and index pages which are later processed and retrieved from the database. If ranking on top of the search engine results pages (SERPs) is crucial for you, then it is important you understand the basics of creating a search engine friendly website.

Below it is explained in detail as to how a search engine works.

Crawling
Firstly, search engines crawl the web to gather information and build their database. This is done by an automated software called a search engine crawler or spider or a bot. These spiders crawl through a site and look at the content (mainly text) to know what the site is about and then start collecting, parsing and storing the data so that it can be easily be retrieved from its database.

However, since there are over billion pages on the web, it is practically impossible for a spider to revisit a site on a daily basis only to see if a new page has been added or an existing page has gone through any modification. Many times the spider may not visit your website for a month or more also, therefore, the true impact of SEO efforts cannot be known immediately.

It is also good to know that search engines are mainly text driven and are oblivious to images, sounds, flash movies, javascript, frames, directories, and similar stuff. Therefore having lots of these on your website may not be very helpful from the SEO point of view as these will not be crawled and indexed for further processing.

Search Engine Indexing
Once a page is crawled, the next step involves indexing the content. This process entails finding those words that can best describe the webpage content and then assigning the webpage to specific keywords. The indexed page is then stored in the huge database for retrieval later. At times, the search engine may not be able to correctly identify the meaning of the page and in such a case optimization of the page can help it classify it rightly and achieve a better ranking for you.

Processing
This is done when a user enters a search query – in simple terms, the search engine analyses the information it has indexed in relation to the search request. Since there will be millions of pages containing the same search term, the search engine calculates the relevance of each page in its database to the search query.

The relevancy of a page is calculated based on various algorithms. These algorithms assign different weights for general aspects like Meta Tags, Keyword Density, and Links. However, one basic truth that you need to know is that all major search engines regularly change their algorithms and if you want to continue to appear on the top of the search results, you need to keep your pages up to date. Also, it would be a wise decision to think about SEO to rank on the top and also gain an edge over your competitors.

Retrieving
This is the last step in the process where the search engine retrieves the results, that is, it throws up all the relevant results before the user. The uses can see a vast pool of information related to their search query.

There may be questions regarding how differently each search engine functions. However, one basic thing that you need to know is that there are differences in the manner various search engines function but at the end of the day they all perform three fundamental tasks:

* Searching the Internet based on the search query entered by the user.
* Maintaining an index of all the information that gather from various pages.
* Permit users to search for words available in that index.

If you have gained an insight into the SEO world, you would have come across the word “backlinks” several times. For those new to the SEO industry, you might wonder what backlinks are and how essential they are for the success of websites.

In short, a Backlink indicates a link from another site to your website. These are also known as inbound links and their number indicates the popularity of the website. Backlinks are considered as votes by search engines: more the number of votes (backlinks) your website has, and based on the importance of websites linking back to yours, your site is assigned a trust rank.

Backlinks today are an important part of the SEO process because when you build quality backlinks, your website stands a higher chance of getting indexed faster by the search engines. Also, from the long term perspective, it will help in boosting quality traffic to your site. Apart from this, building backlinks serves your bottom-line of website visibility by improving your page ranking and ultimately your ranking in the search engines.

Additionally, it is not just enough to have lots of backlinks, but, it’s also the quality of backlinks that helps in achieving a better ranking in search engines. When calculating the relevance of a website to a particular keyword, search engines usually take into consideration the number of quality backlinks to that website.
Search engines like Google give a lot of importance to websites that contain more number of quality backlinks and also consider those websites as more relevant when compared to others in search results.

A backlink is considered as a quality link if:

a) It links back to your site with the keyword which you are optimizing for.

b) The website linking back to yours has the same theme as your website – this means that when your website contains an inbound link from another site, and that site has content related to your website, this inbound link will be considered as more relevant to your website. However, if this inbound link comes from a site that is totally unrelated to your site content, then it is considered as a less relevant backlink. Therefore, higher the relevancy of backlinks, the greater will be their quality.

For instance, if you have a website about furniture and you receive an inbound link from another website also containing furniture, then this backlink will be considered more relevant and of higher quality when compared to a backlink from a florist website.

Today, search engines watch out for websites that build quality backlinks slowly over time. Though it is quite easy to maneuver links on webpage’s in order to attain a high ranking, it is much tougher to manipulate search engines with inbound links from other sites. This is also one of the reasons for backlinks gaining increased importance in search engine algorithms. Recently, search engines assessment for quality backlinks has become even tougher as there are many webmasters out there who make use of unethical techniques and deceive search engines to attain a higher ranking. These techniques are not only illegitimate but can also lead to your site getting banned.

Lastly, building quality backlinks could be a very time consuming and tedious process requiring a lot of patience, efforts, and also funds. However, it is a crucial step in creating blogs or any website since the quality and relevancy of backlinks can determine the success or failure of the site. Therefore, it is very important that you prioritize this in your SEO activity and hire professional SEO experts to whom you can outsource this task and achieve a better search engine ranking.
