The concept of search engine optimization (SEO) has gained a lot of importance today due to the success and profitability it brings along with it. To become an SEO professional does not require you to master programming or have an indepth understanding of search engine algorithms. All it requires is an understanding of a few basic things to ensure you have a search engine friendly website.
You may also be having the best products and services to offer, best performance certifications, and an amazing team of professionals working for you and so on that add more value to your business; however, you need to understand few basics on making a great site that search engines can track easily.
Below are some fundamentals that will not only help you in creating the most search engine friendly website but also in keeping an easy track of it.
How Do Spiders Work?
One of the facts about search engines is that they utilize software programs known as bots or spiders that crawl the web and build their database. These spiders are sent to view and index pages which are later processed and retrieved from the database. A search engine spider is designed in such a way that it reads any document from top left corner to the bottom right corner as humans do.
Placing Text Links
You can also use these bots to your benefit by allowing them to spider your site completely. You can place text links that direct to some of your main pages on the website at the bottom of your page so that spiders can easily crawl through your site. It is also recommended to have a text link that directs to your site map.
Site Title
The title of your site is very important as it not only serves as a reference for the Internet users who type in the keyword but also it is one of the first things that is viewed by the search engines. You must select the best keywords and place in your title and also make sure that these keywords are relevant to the content on your webpage.
Meta Tag Description
A meta tag description contains a brief description of the webpage content. It is usually placed after the Title tag and before the Keywords Meta tag. Search engines usually use this as a source of information to know the theme of the site and to aid them in listing and ranking the website. Your meta description may contain two to three sentences with the main keyword placed in the beginning of every sentence. This description appears fully or partially along with your reference link when users search.
Keyword Usage
Choosing the right keywords to optimize your site is very important. The content on your webpages should contain the keywords that you are optimizing so that the search engine can easily track your website when a user enters a search query containing your keyword. Using your keywords correctly can help identify your site related to that particular keyword from all other sites on the Internet.
Keyword Rich Content
This is a crucial part of the SEO process as it involves creating compelling text that would make readers remember by linking back to it. Your webpage content should be written in such a way that it contains targeted keywords with an ideal keyword density. The content you write must make sense and should be relevant to the person visiting the site. You should also avoid mixing too many themes on a single page. It is also good to know that search engines are mainly text driven and are oblivious to images, sounds, flash movies, javascript, frames, directories, and similar stuff. Therefore having lots of these on your website may not be very helpful from the SEO point of view.
Anchor Text
Anchor text is hyperlinked text that you can click on. This is used in the content as an internal link that directs visitors to different topics contained in different pages in the website. Keywords that are most relevant and that relate to the overall content of your site should be used in the anchor text as search engines use this to relate your webpage content to the user query.

Search Engine Optimization Tips and Free SEO Tools

Do you realize that if you manage your website, SEO tools, and pay-per-click tools, you can literally have as many leads as you want from your website? I assume that a website should convert approximately 5% of the viewers to doers, taking some kind of action that you want them to take. So, all we have to do is make sure the website does convert viewers to doers, and then we make sure we’ve got the right amount of traffic arriving at the website. All quite manageable. Today, we’re mainly talking about how to get the traffic to your website through Search Engine Optimization, SEO.
Here is a list of the best tools I’ve found to do SEO and a quick review of some of the top issues for SEO. Most of these tools are either free, or can be tried for free before buying
Most search engines are looking at your site to find relevant search words. How relevant determines your eventual search engine position.
How do they determine relevancy? Although every search engine has slightly different rules, here are some of the key ideas. Keep in mind, they could change tomorrow. Search engines are continually changing because just as soon as they determine how to find the relevant search words on your site, someone finds a way around their rules. Then search engines change the rules again.
A key word usually has to show up in each of the following areas of your site, with a density that falls within a range that search engine would like to see. They also like to see the words at a certain position in that area, usually at or near the beginning of these areas:
Areas search engines look at:
1)Meta tags (title, description, and keywords) (NOTE: I’m told that most search engines don’t consider meta tags any longer, but I keep seeing my keywords pop up from the meta tags).
2)Body text of the site
3)Headlines
4)Alternate text behind the graphics
5)Links, and link text
How do you choose the right keywords?
Here’s a big warning: Consider what people are looking for, not who you are or what your product is. For me, I would rather be found for “small business help” than for my company name, The Leader’s Perspective. Obviously I want people to find me, if by chance they are looking for me by name, but just think about this:
Aren’t there more people in the world looking for “small business help” or “business help” than could possibly be looking for my name. Those looking for my company name are those that I have probably met personally and sent them to my site. That’s a small number, in comparison to the number of companies on the internet looking for help that don’t have any idea who I am….yet anyway. Here are some tools to find the right keywords.
Google Keyword tool — (go to Google and look up Google Keyword tool) enter keyword(s), and Google will return the number of times that keyword was searched for in the last month. It will also show you other variances of that same keyword and the number of searches for each variance. Use this to brainstorm keywords. (NOTE: I’ve also discovered this is a VERY useful tool to use before sending out any kind of marketing. Find what people are looking for and then make sure those words show up in your marketing, AND in your website.
Wordtracker is another decent tool. Now, this is an even better tool. This one contains a thesaurus as well, so it will show lots of other ways people have been searching for the keywords you’ve typed in. This tool also has a way of measuring the RIGHT keyword that is even better than Overture for Search engine optimization.
Google reports the number of searches last month for that keyword, so you can find the words that have the greatest number of searches. However, Wordtracker, reports the greatest number of searches for the words with the LEAST competition.
When you are doing SEO it won’t do you any good to go after the words that have been searched for the most if there are millions of competing sites. It’s just not likely that you COULD get a page 1 ranking among millions of sites. So, Wordtracker helps you find words that have been searched for ENOUGH to give you traffic, but at the same time have the least competition. They provide their own proprietary ranking that finds the best search words that you are likely to get a search engine position for. Just make sure that the words you end up with from that search actually are words that someone would be looking for to find you. Hint: I use Overture to find the greatest number of searches and use that for pay-per-clicks, and use Wordtracker to find the right search words for Search engine optimization. Here are some other useful tools.

Internet Business Promoter will provide not only an analysis of many of the search engine sensitive stats, but will give you almost a step-by-step how to fix your site. Although this has ended up down the list, this is probably the number one greatest tool to learn search engine optimization.
Link Popularity Search engines tend to give websites that have more external links from other websites pointing at them a higher search engine ranking. Here is a free tool to track your link popularity, and to check our competition as well.

Search Engine Optimization, now including Local Search Engine Optimization, is not a basic science. Customers, more often than ever, are asking the following question and we will try to answer with useful ideas.
Search Engine Marketing Question: I have a Los Angeles website design company and 90% of my business is local based. How should I do my SEO / SEM for my website design? Do I have to do something different for Los Angeles SEO and search engine marketing?

Organic Local Search Engine Optimization for Los Angeles Web Design and related service keywords. If you have a Los Angeles business and you want to reach local prospects, search engine rankings for local keywords are critical.
With local SEO, one does the same things one would go with global or international SEO. Local SEO still must consider keyword research, ensuring site crawl ability, creating unique and useful content for pages, submitting to local and non local directories, and building out other links from other sites.
Here are some additional useful tips:
1. Local directory listings can be cheaper than general listings and provide a solid ROI. If website pages are ranking well in relevant Google search results, they are good places to be listed.
2. Submit your website design to local Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau. A Los Angeles website design company can join more than 20 chambers in Los Angeles County alone.
3. Build editorial linkage through directory listings and other related link building activities that do not charge by the click. Paid inclusions can be costly, especially if the people who are clicking were searching for your name. 7. Focus on one page per location. Your home page should target the most important city or few cities, and use interior pages for other cities. Too many towns reduces page relevancy to local searchers. Smaller towns tend to rank easier by using good title tags and internal page linking. The more relevant your page is to a buyer, the higher the conversion rates are.
8. The Google Local Business Center allows one to list businesses on Google Local and Google Maps for free. Google is also testing AdWords ads allowing users to buy local ads on Google Maps.
9. Yahoo! Local offers free basic listings and a monthly flat rate advertising fee based on your local market size and business category.
10. Other local search sites and local directories are: Verizon Superpages, TrueLocal, and CitySearch. Other options include CraigsList, judysbook, switchboard, and local library web sites.
11. For Local Search Advertising test market demands using: Google Adwords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and MSN AdCenter.
12. Local Search Advertising Questions to ask yourself: Are you bidding on ads relevant to your area? Are you bidding on core terms and alternate ways to define your products? Is your add copy for each keyword group relevant?
13. Google AdWords allow users to set up advertisements in many ways using modifiers to target your local ads.
