There are two things every small business owner need to understand about the power of the internet. They apply whatever business you are in, whatever services you provide and whatever product you offer, and neglecting to follow them could mean a loss of sales in the long term.

 

Firstly, the internet is now the primary source for local business information. This has been confirmed by numerous studies, the most recent of which conducted by TMP Directional Media, which suggests that more users use search engines like Google to find their information than they do a typical local business directory such as the Yellow Pages.

 

It’s crucial to not only develop a web presence for your business but also to maintain it and to make sure it receives exposure. To do this, you’ll need to rank well with search engines and the number one search engine is Google, which commands around 90% of all searches in the UK. However, ranking well in Google won’t happen simply by creating a website and hoping for the best.

 

Search Engine Optimisation (AKA SEO) is needed to ensure the right keywords are targeted and the website is reaching people likely to actually buy the product or use the service. Traditionally SEO  has been used on a national or even a global scale to promote websites, but in the last few years local SEO has been growing in popularity. Local SEO allows you to optimise your site in such a way that it will appear higher in Google ranking when users search for a keyword, such as “Electricians in Bristol” or “Restaurants in Brighton”.

 

This brings us to the second thing that you need to know. The algorithm that Google uses to find local results and display relative websites is not the same as the algorithm it uses on a national or global scale. Some of the things it looks for are quite different, and it’s in knowing what Google is looking for that you can start to build up a good local SEO campaign.

 

This is why finding an SEO company with local SEO experience is crucial. Although there are plenty of small changes and techniques which can be employed by a business owner or webmaster such as improving the overall design of the site or submitting your business to various online directories, many other more technical elements of local SEO are best approached by an SEO agency.

 

Choosing an agency might seem difficult, especially as you do have to the trust them to do the job well. The two most important considerations to make are to find a company that can specialise in local SEO and to make sure they advertise the use of ethical methods. Ethical methods in the case of SEO means helping Google find your site and rank it high because it contains relevant information. Other forms of SEO use much more shady techniques which can see your site being blacklisted by search engines entirely.

 

The good news is that once you’ve found an SEO agency, local SEO tends to very cheap compared to the large amount of return on investment that can be expected from a good campaign. Although an ongoing SEO presence might be needed for your company to stay on top, investment in search and online exposure almost always pays off in the long run.
